Christian Medical College, Vellore has been regularly conducting the “Winter Symposium” since 2002, each covering an important subject in Medicine. The primary aim of these symposia is to motivate young medical students to engage in quality research.
The Winter Symposium this year will be held on 13th and 14thJanuary, 2017. This time the mandate has been given to the Department of Radiology, which has selected a multidisciplinary topic – “Vascular Anomalies”.
“Vascular anomalies” is an all-inclusive term for vascular malformations, vascular tumors and other congenital vascular defects. They represent defects or development problems that occurred during embryonic growth, and the result can involve capillaries, arteries, veins, lymph vessels, or combinations of these. The disorders can range from a simple “birthmark” to life- threatening entities, and may manifest at birth, or later in life. Incorrect nomenclature and misdiagnoses are commonly experienced by patients with these anomalies. Accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial for appropriate evaluation and management, often requiring multidisciplinary specialists.
The goal of the symposium is to improve awareness of vascular anomalies among medical personnel and the public on this subcontinent.
