New Delhi: Research in the medical field should be combined with patient care and teaching, a top Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) official said.
Unlike the West, research institutes in the country were concentrating on research programmes while medical colleges on teaching. This was not a good situation and there should be combining the research with the teaching and patient care, ICMR Director General Dr Soumya Swaminathan said.
She was delivering her address at the eighth convocation of centrally administered JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research).
Swaminathan, who is also Secretary of Health Research in the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry, said institutes like JIPMER, All India Institute of Medical Sciences should move in that direction.
Lauding the initiatives of JIPMER in establishing a school of public health, she said innovations in health delivery services could also be ensured through partnerships with different institutions within the country and also globally.
President of the governing committee of JIPMER Dr M K Bhan presented gold medals to the graduates passing out of JIPMER with proficiency in different courses.
Director of JIPMER S C Parija highlighted the achievements of the institutes during the last one year.
