ANKLE TWIST LEADS 11-YEAR-OLD TO DEATH

A benign ankle twist sustained by an 11-year-old boy in the US while running on a treadmill, which resulted in a flesh-eating infection, caused his death.
Jesse Brown hurt his ankle a few weeks ago while using a treadmill. His entire leg was covered in what appeared to be splotchy, purple, and red blotches that resembled bruises, his family found out a few days later. Soon after, doctors told Brown that he had developed flesh-eating bacteria from a group A strep infection. After that, Brown was admitted to an ICU.
"They claimed that the infection most likely attacked his ankle because he had rolled it. It was already fragile, "Jesse Brown's cousin Megan Brown said. Dr Candice Jones, an Orlando paediatrician, claims that there has recently been an increase in invasive strep-a cases among children in the United States.
"According to some speculation, some of those cases began after respiratory infections, and we had already been noticing an increase in those infections after the pandemic. Thus, there are numerous entry points through which these bacteria can infect people, leading to mild to severe illness and even death "The doctor explained.
The bacteria that causes strep throat also causes group-A strep. In extremely rare instances, it can result in a secondary infection like flesh-eating disease, though the majority of cases are not as severe. Swelling, redness, a bad odour, fever, and swelling are symptoms to watch out for. The doctor explained that a type of bacteria known as group A Streptococcus (group A strep) can result in numerous infections. According to the CDC, these infections range from minor illnesses to very serious and fatal diseases.
