WHAT IS ENDOMETRIOSIS?
Endometriosis is a disease characterized by the presence of tissue resembling endometrium outside the uterus. It causes a chronic inflammatory reaction that may result in the formation of scar tissue within the pelvis and other parts of the body.
WHAT IS ENDOMETRIOSIS DAY?
Endometriosis Awareness Day is observed on March 1, during Endometriosis Awareness Month. According to the Endometriosis Foundation of America, awareness is the biggest issue in battling endometriosis. The whole month, and day, are dedicated to primarily creating awareness.
HISTORY OF ENDOMETRIOSIS DAY
The Endometriosis Association initiated Endometriosis Awareness Month in 1993. What started as a small-scale campaign is observed worldwide today. These campaigns include fundraisers, educational activities, and marches.
CAUSES OF ENDOMETRIOSIS
Although the exact cause of endometriosis is not certain, possible explanations include-Retrograde menstruation, Transformation of peritoneal cells, Embryonic cell transformation, Surgical scar implantation, Endometrial cell transport, and Immune system disorder.
SYMPTOMS OF ENDOMETRIOSIS
Signs and symptoms of endometriosis include- Painful periods (dysmenorrhea), Pain with intercourse, Pain with bowel movements or urination, Excessive bleeding, Infertility and fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, or nausea, especially during menstrual periods.
TREATMENTS FOR ENDOMETRIOSIS
Treatment for endometriosis usually involves medication or surgery depending on how severe your signs and symptoms are and whether you hope to become pregnant. Doctors typically recommend trying conservative treatment approaches first, opting for surgery if the initial treatment fails. Treatments may include- Pain medication, Hormone therapy, Conservative surgery, Fertility treatment, Hysterectomy with the removal of the ovaries
