INTERNATIONAL WEEK OF THE DEAF

19TH SEPTEMBER - 25TH SEPTEMBER 2023
WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL WEEK OF THE DEAF?
The International Week of the Deaf (IWDeaf), which was acknowledged and observed by the WFD in 1958, includes the IDSL during the final full week of September. The IWDeaf is observed by various Deaf groups in Canada and other countries through various events. Diverse stakeholders, such as families, peers, governmental organizations, qualified sign language interpreters, and Disabled Person Organizations (DPOs), are encouraged to take part in these activities.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL WEEK OF THE DEAF
International Week of Deaf People (IWDP) is a celebration of Deaf culture first launched by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) in 1958. It is recognized annually by Deaf communities all over the world during the last full week of September.
THEME FOR 2023
The theme for International Week Of The Deaf is “A World Where Deaf People Everywhere Can Sign Anywhere!” The country leaders - whether Prime Ministers, Presidents, other government officials, members of parliaments, members of city council - should sign this year's theme in their national sign language.
WHAT CAUSES HEARING LOSS?
Hearing loss is a common problem caused by loud noise, aging, disease, and genetic variations. About one-third of older adults have hearing loss, and the chance of developing hearing loss increases with age. People with hearing loss may find it hard to have conversations with friends and family. They may also have trouble understanding a doctor’s advice, responding to warnings, and hearing doorbells and alarms.
TYPES OF HEARING LOSS
There are three types of hearing loss:
CONDUCTIVE HEARING LOSS
This hearing loss occurs when something prevents sound from entering your inner ear or outer ear (ear canal).
SENSORINEURAL HEARING LOSS
When your inner ear is harmed over time by something, hearing loss develops. Very rapid sensorineural hearing loss occurs seldom. This is sudden deafness or sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL). SSHL can occur suddenly or gradually over a few days.
MIXED
This occurs when you have problems with both your inner and outer ears (conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss)
