INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY

21ST JUNE 2023
THEME FOR 2023
This year's theme for International Yoga Day is "Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" which perfectly encapsulates our shared desire for "One Earth, One Family, and One Future."
WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY?
One of the best methods for enhancing both physical and mental health is yoga. Since 2015, the 21st of June has been designated as International Yoga Day. Every year, it coincides with the summer solstice. The date was chosen because it falls on the Northern Hemisphere's longest day of the year and has special significance in many cultures.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY
The International Day of Yoga was proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014, during his speech to the UN General Assembly. Yoga, according to Modi, is a "gift of India" that can improve people's health and happiness around the world. On December 11, 2014, 193 of the UN's member countries decided to observe June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. The celebration of the first day occurred on June 21, 2015.
WHAT IS YOGA?
The ancient art of yoga may have its roots in India. It incorporates breathing exercises, meditation, and movement to enhance both mental and physical well-being. There are many different styles of yoga as well as numerous sub-disciplines. In the ancient text known as the Rig Veda, the word "yoga" is first mentioned. Yoga's name is derived from the Sanskrit verb "yuj," which means "union" or "to join."
HEALTH BENEFITS OF YOGA
Yoga enhances flexibility, strength, and balance, among other health advantages. It improves the health of the heart and lungs, lowers tension and anxiety, sharpens the mind, and encourages restful sleep. Additionally, it strengthens the immune system and may lessen chronic pain, which results in an improvement in general well-being.
WHAT ARE THE MYTHS SURROUNDING YOGA?
Common myths about yoga include the belief that it's only for the flexible or physically fit, that it's purely a physical exercise routine, that it's tied to a specific religion, and that it's all about achieving complex poses. In reality, yoga is inclusive for all, integrates mind, body, and spirit, can be practised by individuals of any faith, and emphasizes self-awareness and inner exploration.
