The purpose of World Blood Donor Day is to increase public understanding of blood donation and to motivate individuals to donate blood frequently for the good of all people. World Blood Donor Day aims to inspire everyone to donate blood in order to save more lives.
HISTORY OF WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY
The idea for blood donor day was initially proposed in May 2005 during the 58th World Health Assembly, where it was voted to designate a day as World Blood Donor Day to be observed annually on June 14 to honor Karl Landsteiner's birthday.
SIGNIFICANCE OF DONATING BLOOD
Across the globe, blood donation is essential to save lives. Most medical issues result in immediate demand for blood, and blood donation plays a key role in these situations. It is crucial to prevent death, assist with patient surgeries, treat cancer, chronic illnesses, and other health risks. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), around 118.54 million donations of blood are made annually. 16% of the world's population lives in high-income countries, where 40% of these are collected. There have reportedly been 106 million donations collected at around 13,300 blood centers throughout 169 nations.

FACTS ABOUT BLOOD DONATION
Around 118.5 million units of donated blood are collected annually throughout the world. One unit of blood can be donated in just one hour and is made up of four different parts that can save many lives. Given that just 1% of Indians donate blood annually, the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that India has a 2 million blood unit shortage every year. In the United States, 36,000 units of red blood cells, 7,000 units of platelets, and 10,000 units of plasma are needed per day, according to the American Red Cross.
