WORLD ELDERS DAY

1TH OCTOBER 2023
WHAT IS WORLD ELDERS DAY?
Every year on October 1, the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) raises awareness of the opportunities and challenges that come with growing older and mobilises community organisations, families, and stakeholders to support older people who are struggling.
HISTORY OF WORLD ELDERS DAY?
The International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) was established on October 1 by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 14, 1990. This was preceded by the start of the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing (VIPAA), which was authorised by the UN General Assembly later that same year after being endorsed by the World Assembly on Ageing (WAA) in 1982.
THEME 2023
This year 2023, the World Elders Day theme is "Fulfilling the Promises of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Older Persons: Across Generations"
IMPORTANCE OF WORLD ELDERS DAY
The importance of the International Day of Older Persons lies in its recognition of the tremendous contributions older people make to society. It raises awareness of the difficulties people encounter while promoting their rights, well-being, and social inclusion. This day serves as a reminder that older people everywhere need access to age-friendly surroundings, healthcare, and policies.
HEALTHY TIPS FOR ELDERS:
With the help of money, family and community support, and self-help, older persons should have access to enough food, drink, shelter, clothing, and medical treatment. Older adults should be allowed to live in environments that are secure and adaptable to their changing needs and capacities. They should be able to work or have access to other income-generating opportunities.
