WORLD HAND HYGIENE DAY

5TH MAY 2023
THEME FOR 2023
With the campaign "Accelerate Action Together. Save Lives- Clean Your Hands", the theme of this year is further briefed as "Together, we can accelerate action to prevent infections and antimicrobial resistance in health care and build a culture of safety and quality in which hand hygiene improvement is given high priority."
WHAT IS WORLD HAND HYGIENE DAY?
World hand hygiene day is observed every year on May 5. People around the globe come together to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining good hand hygiene in healthcare facilities to protect patients, staff members, and the general public from infections.
HISTORY OF WORLD HAND HYGIENE DAY
In order to further the goal of maintaining a global profile on the significance of hand hygiene in healthcare, World Health Organisation launched the "Save Lives: Clean Your Hands" global annual campaign in 2009. This day, May 5, is recognised as World Hand Hygiene Day.
IMPORTANCE OF HAND HYGIENE
The majority of germs that result in serious infections in people are spread by other people. Using good hand hygiene is one of the most efficient ways to stop these infections. During medical care, hands are the primary means of germ transmission. Therefore, the most crucial step in preventing the spread of dangerous germs and infections linked to medical care is practising good hand hygiene.
TIPS TO MAINTAIN PROPER HAND HYGIENE
Keep your hands clean. Never rush through hand washing. Wash and thoroughly dry your hands after using soap and water to do so. Use a fresh towel or tissue to wipe your hands, or let them air dry. In public restrooms, avoid using hand dryers because they tend to spread more germs. If you don't have immediate access to soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand rub. It's challenging to keep track of the surfaces you're coming across. So, to avoid spreading germs, it is best to carry a pack of hand wipes.
