World Immunization Day is celebrated on November 10 every year. It is celebrated in order to spread awareness about the benefits of getting vaccinated and how it can prevent a plethora of diseases in the long run.
WHAT ARE VACCINES?
A vaccine is a biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a particular infectious or malignant disease.
NATIONAL VACCINE SCHEDULE
In India, most of the major diseases causing infections like tuberculosis, polio, hepatitis b, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, influenza, measles, and mumps are covered under the national immunization schedule. Rota viral vaccine and vaccines against pneumonia are also recently included in our national vaccine schedule.
HOW DO VACCINES WORK?
Vaccines contain antigen which is either killed, inactivated, or attenuated. On entering the human body it stimulates the immune system to produce protective antibodies. The antibody production increases on subsequent doses and also with subsequent infections by immunological memory.
