WORLD LUPUS DAY

10TH MAY 2023
THEME FOR 2023
The theme for this year is "Make Lupus Visible", which aims to raise awareness of lupus diagnoses and its psychological, social, and financial effects. The campaign also aims to persuade the World Health Organisation to include lupus in its top global health concerns list.
WHAT IS WORLD LUPUS DAY?
World Lupus Day is marked on 10th May, every year, to raise awareness about this serious condition that necessitates a thorough understanding, support for each person affected, and increased funding for additional research.
HISTORY OF WORLD LUPUS DAY
Lupus Canada established World Lupus Day in 2004 to raise awareness of the condition, which can have devastating effects on both sufferers and their loved ones. In an effort to raise money for research, better patient care, more incidence data, and awareness, lupus groups from 13 different countries banded together and protested against their respective governments.
WHAT IS LUPUS?
The autoimmune disease lupus is brought on when the body's immune system attacks its own tissues and organs. Lupus-related inflammation can impact a variety of bodily functions, including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs.
SYMPTOMS OF LUPUS
Depending on which body systems are impacted by the illness, you may experience different lupus signs and symptoms. The most common signs and symptoms are fatigue, fever, joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. Other signs and symptoms include rashes elsewhere on the body, a butterfly-shaped rash on the face covering the cheeks and bridge, skin lesions that appear or worsen with sun exposure, white or blue fingers and toes that appear when exposed to cold or under stressful circumstances, shortness of breath, chest pain, dry eyes, headaches, confusion, and memory loss.
CAUSES OF LUPUS
Lupus is an autoimmune disease, meaning it develops when your body's healthy tissue is attacked by your immune system. It's likely that a combination of your genetics and environment led to the development of lupus. It seems that individuals who have an inherited propensity for lupus may develop the condition when they come into contact with an environmental trigger. In the majority of cases, the cause of lupus is unknown.
