World Malaria Day is observed every year on 25 April and recognizes global efforts to control malaria.
World Malaria Day was established in May 2007 by the 60th session of the World Health Assembly, WHO's decision-making body. The day was established to provide "education and understanding of malaria" and spread information on "malaria-control strategies".
The day is celebrated and observed to raise awareness about this life-threatening disease and also to allow new donors to join the fight against malaria by organizing fundraisers for the initiative.
"An estimated 14 million more cases and 69,000 more deaths were caused by malaria during 2020 compared to 2019. India was the only high-burden country to record progress by sustaining a reduction in malaria burden between 2019 and 2020, the WHO report stated".
World Malaria Day 2022 will be marked under the theme “Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives.” WHO is calling for investments and innovation that bring new vector control approaches, diagnostics, antimalarial medicines and other tools to speed the pace of progress against malaria.
