WORLD MALARIA DAY

25th April 2024
WHAT IS WORLD MALARIA DAY?
World Malaria Day, observed on April 25th annually, aims to raise awareness about malaria, a life-threatening disease caused by parasites transmitted through mosquito bites. It promotes global efforts to prevent, control, and eventually eliminate malaria through education, advocacy, and action.
THEME OF WORLD MALARIA DAY
The theme for World Malaria Day 2024 is “Accelerate the fight against malaria for a more equitable world.”
CAUSES OF MALARIA
Malaria, a perilous mosquito-borne illness, stems from Plasmodium parasites transmitted by infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Five parasite species—P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale, and P. knowlesi—cause the disease, with P. falciparum exclusively affecting humans and P. knowlesi spreading to macaques and monkeys.
SYMPTOMS AND TRANSMISSION
Malaria symptoms, including fever and headache, typically manifest within 10 to 15 days after a mosquito bite. Despite over 400 Anopheles mosquito species, about 40 are malaria vectors. Immunity in endemic areas may result in asymptomatic cases.
TREATMENT AND PREVENTION
On Malaria Day, the focus is on treatment and prevention. This involves ensuring access to effective medication, implementing mosquito control measures, and educating communities to reduce transmission rates and alleviate the burden of the disease.
