Subcortical nuclei were distinguished from cortex and white matter in the 16th century by Vesalius and Piccolomini. In contrast, Willis proposed the corpus striatum as the origin of motor function in the late 17th century. Movement disorders were confined to the striatum by Broadbent, Jackson, and Chorea in the middle of the 19th century, and by Hammond, athetosis. Many movement disorders had been described by the late 19th century, but for the vast majority, there was no pathologic correlate.
