WORLD MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS DAY

30TH MAY 2023
THEME FOR 2023
The theme for World Multiple Sclerosis Day in 2023 is "MS Connections" and it builds on the theme first used in 2020. The theme emphasises the value of creating connections with oneself, others, and others to access high-quality care for MS patients. The MS Connections theme will put the spotlight on practical social barriers that cause Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients to be socially isolated.
WHAT IS WORLD MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS DAY?
World Multiple Sclerosis Day (also known as World MS Day) is observed on the 30th of May, every year, a day dedicated to raising awareness of the economic, social, and cultural effects of multiple sclerosis (MS) diseases and promoting acceptance, inclusion, and support for those living with the condition.
HISTORY OF WORLD MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS DAY
The MS International Federation (MSIF), a cutting-edge global network of diverse MS organisations, created the first Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day in 2009 with the goal of assisting those affected by MS through a large global volunteer and staff force. Several nations, including Greece, Argentina, Australia, the United States, India, Kenya, Tunisia, the United Kingdom, and Spain, are represented by MSIF representatives.
WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS?
The central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) is potentially paralysed by the autoimmune disease known as multiple sclerosis (MS). A fatty layer called the myelin sheath surrounds the nerve fibres and aids in the rapid and effective transmission of electrical impulses along the nerve cells. In MS (Multiple Sclerosis), the immune system's assaults on the myelin sheath cause communication problems between the brain and the body.
TYPES OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
There are four main types of MS (multiple sclerosis), which include clinically isolated syndrome(CIS), which refers to the initial neurological symptom episode that may or may not progress to multiple sclerosis. Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) - Consists of symptom relapses followed by remissions. In secondary progressive MS (SPMS), the symptoms progressively get worse over time. Primary Progressive MS (PPMS)- In this form of MS, symptoms and disability steadily deteriorate over time.
CAUSES OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
Since Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune condition, there is no way to prevent it. However, understanding the condition may help identify a few potential triggers. Although the precise cause of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is unknown, it is thought to result from a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors. The patient's genetic makeup, immune system dysfunction, exposure to viral infections (Epstein-Barr virus), chronic smoking, and low vitamin D levels are some factors that may cause Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
