WHAT IS WORLD OBESITY DAY?
World Obesity Day is a unified day of action that calls for a cohesive, cross-sector response to the obesity crisis. It takes place on 4 March and is convened by the World Obesity Federation in collaboration with its global members.
HISTORY OF WORLD OBESITY DAY
World Obesity Day was first established in 2015 as an annual campaign to address the global obesity crisis. The day serves as a platform to raise awareness, advocate for practical solutions, and promote a cohesive, cross-sector response to obesity.
THEME FOR 2024
The theme for World Obesity Day 2024, "Obesity & Youth: Young people catalyzing change," is specifically chosen to highlight the role of young individuals in driving change and addressing the obesity crisis.
WHAT IS OBESITY?
Obesity is a condition characterized by an excessive accumulation of body fat that can negatively impact health. It is typically defined using the Body Mass Index (BMI), with a BMI over 30 indicating obesity in adults.
A LOOMING THREAT
Obesity is dangerous to health as it increases the risk of various diseases and health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, liver disease, certain cancers, heart attacks, and strokes.
