World Pneumonia Day (12 November) provides an annual forum for the world to stand together and demand action in the fight against pneumonia. Pneumonia accounts for 14% of all deaths of children under 5 years old, killing 740 180 children in 2019.
Pneumonia is a form of acute respiratory infection that affects the lungs. When an individual has pneumonia, the alveoli are filled with pus and fluid, which makes breathing painful and limits oxygen intake. Pneumonia is the single largest infectious cause of death in children worldwide.
World pneumonia day was established by the Stop Pneumonia Initiative in 2009 to raise awareness and advocate for global action. It’s observed on 12th November every year. As per the World health organization (WHO), Lower respiratory infections remained the world’s most deadly communicable disease.

The theme for World Pneumonia Day 2021 is “Stop Pneumonia, Every breath counts" because pneumonia has been recognized as the single biggest infectious killer of adults and children that claimed the lives of 2.5 million people in the year 2019, out of which, 6,72,000 were children.
