The theme is "#Precioustime", concluded by WSO to promote the World Stroke Day awareness and support campaign to pace up the previous year's 2021 campaign "Minutes Can Save Lives".
WHAT IS STROKE?
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds, or when there’s a blockage in the blood supply to the brain. The rupture or blockage prevents blood and oxygen from reaching the brain’s tissues.
ABOUT WORLD STROKE DAY
World Stroke Day takes place on Oct 29th annually. It was established by World Stroke Organization and provides a global platform for the stroke community to increase awareness and drive action on stroke around the world.
HISTORY OF WORLD STROKE DAY
The WSO celebrated the first World Stroke Day in 2006. The organization came into being the same year after the merger of the International Stroke Society (ISS) and the World Stroke Federation (WSF). The WSO is a non-profit agency that works to raise awareness about strokes and help stroke survivors in getting back to their lives.
SYMPTOMS OF A STROKE
Symptoms of stroke include trouble walking, speaking and understanding, as well as paralysis or numbness of the face, arm or leg.
TREATMENTS FOR A STROKE
Early treatment with medication like tPA (clot buster) can minimize brain damage. Other treatments focus on limiting complications and preventing additional strokes.
