WORLD THYROID DAY

25TH MAY 2023
THEME FOR 2023
The theme for World Thyroid Day 2023 has not been announced yet.
WHAT IS WORLD THYROID DAY?
World Thyroid Day is marked on the 25th of May, every year, to raise awareness of the prevalence of thyroid disease, patient experiences, and all those dedicated to the global study and treatment of thyroid diseases.
HISTORY OF WORLD THYROID DAY
The creation of "World Thyroid Day" on May 25th was decided upon during the annual general meeting of Thyroid Federation International in September 2007. Although Thyroid Federation International did not officially organise the 2008 World Thyroid Day celebration, many of its member organisations did. On May 25, 2008, the European Thyroid Association also declared the first "European Thyroid Day" to mark the association's anniversary, encouraging thyroid organisations and networks in Europe to host events on that day going forward.
WHAT ARE COMMON THYROID DISEASES?
The thyroid gland affects nearly every metabolic process in your body by producing hormones. From a minor, treatable goitre (enlarged gland) to potentially fatal cancer, thyroid conditions can affect anyone. The majority of thyroid issues are caused by abnormal thyroid hormone production. Hyperthyroidism is the result of having too much thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism is brought on by inadequate hormone production. While some thyroid conditions can have unpleasant or uncomfortable side effects, with the right diagnosis and treatment, the majority can be effectively managed.
SYMPTOMS OF HYPERTHYROIDISM
A hyperactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can cause a variety of symptoms, such as anxiety, irritability, nervousness, difficulty sleeping, weight loss, an enlarged thyroid gland or a goitre, muscle weakness and tremors, irregular menstrual cycles or a cessation of your menstrual cycle, heat sensitivity, vision issues, and eye irritation.
SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM
Hypothyroidism, also known as an underactive thyroid, can cause symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, forgetfulness, frequent and heavy menstrual periods, dry and coarse hair, hoarse voice, and intolerance to cold temperatures.
OTHER THYROID DISEASES
Goitre: A goitre frequently results from thyroid gland inflammation or iodine deficiency. Hashimoto's thyroiditis: It is an autoimmune condition in which the thyroid gland is attacked by the body's immune system. Thyroid Cancer: A condition in which the tissues of the thyroid gland develop malignant (cancer) cells.
THYROID DISEASES PREVENTION
A few recommendations can help you avoid thyroid disease. For example, maintaining a healthy diet with adequate iodine, selenium, and iron intake, quitting smoking, abstaining from excessive alcohol consumption, managing stress, getting enough restful sleep, and engaging in safe sun exposure to maintain adequate vitamin D levels are some of the lifestyle choices that fall under this category. Regular examinations and thyroid function monitoring are also crucial for the early identification and treatment of any potential thyroid disorders.
