Berhampur: In an unfortunate incident, a 51-year-old government doctor allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan at his in-law's house in Odisha’s Gajapati district on Monday.
The doctor was working as the joint director at the Gajapati district headquarters hospital in Paralakhemundi. He was also an alumnus of MKCG Medical College and Hospital (MCH) in Berhampur.
Meanwhile, the sudden death of the doctor has stirred tension among the citizens living in the same area who are also shocked by what had happened. Although the reason behind his death is unknown, police are trying to identify the cause as early as possible.
The body was sent for post-mortem examination to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital, police said.
He went to his in-laws’ house on Friday where his wife and two sons lived, they said.
The doctor went to sleep on Sunday night with his elder son. When the son woke up, he could not find his father and started searching for him. The family found another room was locked from inside, and after breaking in, they found his body hanging from the ceiling fan, police said.
“We have registered a case of unnatural death case and began an investigation. The exact cause of his death will be ascertained only after getting the post-mortem report,” said Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M.
Additional District Medical Officer Pramod Kumar Panda said the doctor was sincere in his work and never shared anything about stress with anyone.
On the other hand, Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M informed TNIE, “There could be some family dispute. Preliminary investigation also revealed that he might be suffering from depression. We are probing the case from all angles,” he added.
“It is a case of utter misfortune to the family. It is sheer misfortune that such a sad and tragic incident has happened,” said Professor Dr. Sudeepa Das of the MKCG College and Hospital who is in charge of the doctor's post-mortem.
