WHAT IS STUTTERING?
Stuttering is a speech disorder involving frequent problems with the normal fluency and flow of speech.
ABOUT INTERNATIONAL STUTTERING AWARENESS DAY
The International Stuttering Awareness Day is annually observed on 22nd October worldwide. The day is intended to raise public awareness of the issues faced by millions of people about one percent of the world's population who stutter, or stammer.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL STUTTERING AWARENESS DAY
International Stuttering Awareness Day was first pitched in 1995 during an International Stuttering Association (ISA) conference in Sweden. In 1998, the European League of Stuttering Associations, International Fluency Association, and International Stuttering Association designated October 22nd as International Stuttering Awareness Day.
CAUSES OF STUTTERING
Abnormalities in speech motor control, Genetics, Stroke, Traumatic brain injury, or other brain disorders can cause speech that is slow or has pauses or repeated sounds (neurogenic stuttering)
TREATMENTS FOR STUTTERING
Treatment may not eliminate all stuttering, but it can teach skills that help to: Improve speech fluency, Develop effective communication, Participate fully in school, work and social activities. Treatments may include- Speech therapy, Electronic devices, Cognitive behavioral therapy, Parent-child interaction.
