Every year, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) announces a new World Food Safety Day subject. The theme addresses a major concern and encourages international leaders to discuss it. "Food Standards Save Lives" is the theme of World Food Safety Day in 2023.
WHAT IS WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY?
World Food Safety Day is observed to encourage producers, consumers, and governments to recognise the common responsibility for food safety. This day was declared by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in 2018. This day aims to raise awareness about food safety in order to reduce health issues and hazards posed by foodborne infections.
HISTORY OF WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY
World Food Safety Day was established by the United Nations in December 2018. It was first observed on June 7, 2019. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the World Health Organisation (WHO), and member countries and organizations collaborated to organize this day. The theme of the first World Food Safety Day was "Food Safety, Everyone's Business."
SIGNIFICANCE OF FOOD SAFETY DAY
Here are some of the implications of World Food Safety Day: Food Safety Day raises awareness in rural and underprivileged communities, It also affects children under the age of five disproportionately, Eating contaminated food including germs, parasites, viruses, chemical compounds, or plastic causes over 200 ailments, World Food Safety Day encourages governments, policymakers, practitioners, and investors to take food safety action.
FOOD SAFETY IN INDIA
India is one of the 189 members that support and observed World Food Safety Day. In 2021, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare virtually attended the Food Safety Day celebrations organized by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has created five parameters to measure the performance of States on food safety: Human Resources & Institutional Arrangements Compliance Food Testing Infrastructure & Surveillance Training, and Capacity Building Consumer Empowerment
WHY IS FOOD SAFETY NECESSARY?
Food is essential for survival and good health. Unsafe food can cause more than 200 ailments, ranging from diarrhea to cancer. Every year, an estimated 600 million individuals nearly one in ten become unwell after eating tainted food.
