WORLD STROKE DAY

29TH OCTOBER 2023
WHAT IS WORLD STROKE DAY?
Every year on October 29, we observe World Stroke Day to increase awareness of stroke and its treatment. It provides a global forum for advocating for policies and education aimed at lessening the effects of strokes, which are the world's greatest cause of disability and death. The day highlights the significance of receiving emergency medical assistance and promotes early detection of stroke symptoms.
WHAT IS STROKE?
When a blood vessel bursts (hemorrhagic stroke) or becomes blocked (ischemic stroke), the brain's blood supply is cut off. It may cause brain damage that results in a variety of disabilities or even death. Treatment for a stroke requires immediate medical intervention.
HISTORY OF WORLD STROKE DAY
World Stroke Day, observed on October 29th each year, raises awareness of a vital health concern. A blockage in the blood vessels causes the brain's blood supply to abruptly stop, resulting in a stroke, also known as a brain attack. Over time, a number of causes may accumulate and cause this blockage.
THEME OF 2023
The theme for World Stroke Day 2023, as designated by WSO, is 'Together we are #Greater Than Stroke.
IMPORTANCE OF WORLD STROKE DAY
Brain stroke is the third-most common cause of disability and the second most common cause of death worldwide. Approximately 1.8 million people get a stroke each year. Notably, stroke cases have increased by a startling 100% in low- and middle-income countries like India, whereas cases have decreased by a noteworthy 42% in developed countries.
TYPES OF STROKE
Strokes typically fall into two categories. First off, an ischemic stroke happens when a blood clot that may have originated in the heart or elsewhere makes its way to the brain, obstructing an artery and decreasing blood flow to that region. A reduced blood supply is referred to as ischemia.
The second kind is called a hemorrhagic stroke, in which an overabundance of blood in the brain can rupture a blood vessel and cause a blood clot to form. It can be difficult to distinguish between the two because they both have symptoms including tingling in the hands or legs, body instability, and drooling on the face.
STEPS TO PREVENT BRAIN STROKE
Taking Up a Healthy Lifestyle: Make it a priority to keep up a healthy lifestyle, Refrain from Smoking: Give up smoking to maintain a healthy circulatory system. Moderate Drinking of Alcohol: Limit alcohol consumption for general health.
Frequent Physical Activity: Include regular exercise in your daily schedule. Conscious Eating: Adjust your diet by cutting back on meat, sugar, and sodium. Regular Health Exams: Take preventative measures by scheduling routine health exams.
