Pune: In a crackdown against illegal medical activities in Maharashtra, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday arrested the dean of the medical college run by a Pune civic body trust for allegedly accepting a Rs 10 lakh bribe in exchange for an MBBS seat.
The accused is the dean of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College, run by the Pune Municipal Corporation Medical Education Trust.
The ACB said the complainant’s son was allotted a seat under the institutional quota in the medical college in the first admission round of the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) after he had cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2023 exam. Following this, the complainant approached the dean.

“(To take the process forward), the dean demanded a Rs 16 lakh bribe other than the government fees of Rs 22.50 lakh from a parent to secure the admission of his son to the MBBS course," said the ACB.
In suspicion of the dean's action, the man approached the ACB and informed them about the illegal activity of the dean. Meanwhile, he told the dean that he would pay Rs 10 lakh as the first instalment.
Later, the ACB team set a trap and the dean was nabbed when he was accepting Rs 10 lakh on Tuesday.
A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and further investigation is underway.
"We will conduct a search at the dean's office and residential premises as part of our further investigation," said an ACB officer.
PMC additional commissioner Vikas Dhakane told TOI, "A recommendation of taking action will be given to the administration department and commissioner’s office. The decision about the suspension of the officer concerned will be taken based on the legal provisions."
