Lakhimpur Kheri:  A district court sent three doctors to jail for three years for filing a wrong postmortem report which suggested that a girl had died of hanging when she was strangled.

The concerned case goes back to 2011, when  14-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree on the campus of the Nighasan police station on June 10, 2011. As per media accounts, girl had gone to the area to graze her cattle but later her body was found hanging from the branch of an uprooted tree. Her mother alleged that she was raped and then murdered.

Dr S P Singh, Dr A K Agrawal and Dr A K Sharma were then posted at the district hospital in Kheri where the first postmortem was conducted.

In their report, the doctors described ante-mortem hanging to be cause of death.

However, the case was handed over to the CB-CID and a fresh postmortem was carried out by a team of four doctors from Lucknow.

The second postmortem established ante-mortem strangulation, which suggested murder instead of suicide as the likely cause of death.

Later, an FIR was lodged against the doctors by a CB-CID inspector.

A charge sheet was filed against them in the court of chief judicial magistrate in August 2014.

Prosecuting officer Saryu Prasad Yadav told reporters that the doctors have been sentenced to three years in jail and also fined Rs 10,000 each.
