5 more Medicine, Ortho resident doctors suspended for drunken brawl at KGMU

Lucknow: The King George's Medical University (KGMU) administration has suspended 5 more resident doctors attached to Orthopaedic and Medicine departments; who engaged in a violent brawl damaging hospital property and creating panic among the patients earlier this week.

According to a recent report by TOI, 3 resident doctors from the Orthopaedic and 2 from the Medicine department have been suspended taking the count to total 11 doctors suspended in the case.

Medical Dialogues had recently reported about the suspension of 6 resident doctors. The suspension was due to an altercation that took place between a faction of doctors from the Orthopaedic and Medicine departments on September 28th in an inebriated state. The resident doctors will stay suspended till the investigation into the case is completed.

According to KGMU administration, on September 28th, two resident doctors of the orthopaedic department lost consciousness after consuming too much alcohol at a birthday party. The two were brought by other resident doctors of the department, who were also in the drunken state, to the trauma centre.

Reportedly, the medicine residents asked their orthopaedic doctors to get registration slips made as it may be required for legal purpose later if the medicos get serious. Agitated over the issue, an argument started between the residents of two groups and some doctors misbehaved.

The police were informed and the matter was resolved. However, later, medicine department resident doctors called others from their department and went to the orthopaedic department and created a ruckus.

The argument between both the parties turned into a brawl which led to vandalism in the premises. During the clash, they ransacked the nursing station and damaged computers installed for patient care and record keeping.

Later, the medicine resident doctors filed an FIR against the Ortho doctors whereas the KGMU authorities lodged complaint against all the involved doctors.

The orthopaedic doctors had then filed a counter complaint accusing 19 medicine residents, including a lady doctor.

Following the incident, the medical college administration had formed a five-member internal fact-finding committee under Prof GP Singh for investigation. Further it suspended 5 doctors on September 30th and now 5 more doctors have been suspended. The resident doctors will stay suspended till the investigation into the case is completed.

TOI reports that all 11 suspended doctors have also been evicted from the hostels on the order of KGMU Chief Proctor Prof Kushwaha. "They have been asked to return their room keys at the provost's office," said Prof Kushwaha.

The university has also decided to withhold their stipend till the completion of the probe.
