Gorakhpur: Serious allegations regarding the supply of counterfeit and substandard medicines at Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University (MGGAU) have come to light, prompting demands for a high-level investigation into the matter.

According to reports, a resident of Sirsiya village has written a formal complaint to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath seeking an impartial inquiry into the alleged irregularities related to medicine procurement and treatment practices at the university.

According to the complaint, the university hospital earlier recorded the footfall of more than 1,500 patients every day for treatment, but the number of patients has now reportedly declined to below 200. The complainant alleged that the decline in patient turnout was linked to the prescription of poor-quality medicines by some doctors associated with the institution.

He further claimed that medicines manufactured by certain “monopoly” companies were allegedly being prescribed despite concerns regarding their quality and effectiveness, reports Dainik Bhaskar.

The complaint also alleged that several medicines procured for free distribution among patients were not meeting the required standards. He also alleged that some Ayurvedic medicines contained impurities such as soil, sand, and harmful colouring substances. According to him, these issues are negatively affecting patients, particularly poor and rural residents who depend on the university hospital for affordable healthcare services and treatment.

He additionally accused certain doctors of prescribing expensive medicines available at their private medical stores instead of recommending cheaper alternatives. He alleged that such practices were creating an unnecessary financial burden on economically weaker patients seeking medical care at the institution.

In his letter, he urged the Chief Minister to order a transparent and independent investigation into the quality of medicines being purchased and distributed at the university. He also demanded strict action against any doctors, suppliers, or officials found guilty after investigation.

So far, no official statement has been issued by the university administration regarding the allegations mentioned in the complaint.
