Kolkata: A recent Central Government report has praised the health service of Bengal, saying that is one of the cheapest in the country, and hence highly affordable for the rural population.

The report by the Central Bureau of Health Statistics says that compared to Gujarat, Goa, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Manipur, Bengal offers health services to the rural populace which are much more poor-friendly in terms of cost.

According to the report, whereas the average national cost of hospitalisation, including tests and medicines, in government-run facilities for one person is Rs 17,000 in rural areas, the cost in Bengal is only Rs 10,000 on an average.

The Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress is rapidly changing the standard of public health service in the state. Treatment at government hospitals is free, including many of the major operations.
