Bhattacharya, a resident anesthetist at the state-run hospital, had been staying on a rental basis with his colleagues. However, on the morning of the incident, when Dr. Ghosh did not respond to repeated phone calls from his colleagues and family members, they alerted the local Jhargram police. The authorities responded swiftly, breaking into his room around 11 a.m., where they discovered the lifeless body of the doctor, along with a note and a syringe lying near his side.
Police have also seized his mobile device, from which important WhatsApp messages were retrieved. These messages were exchanged between the doctor, his wife, and a group of medical professionals just before the incident.
According to police, in these messages, the doctor discussed with his wife about various "personal, mental, professional, and family issues." Dr. Bhattacharya had sent another message to a group of colleagues in which he highlighted concerns about the "threat culture" and corruption within the medical sector. In the message, he claimed that those who instill fear among students and support nepotism are no less guilty than R.G. Kar's former Principal, Sandip Ghosh, who is currently in judicial custody.
As per the latest media reports by the Statesman, a PIL has been filed seeking a CBI investigation into the matter.
