Mumbai: Taking cognizance of the continual discrepancies with PG certificates from the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS), the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) has asked the government to take over the institute while suspending the licenses of 14 more speciality doctors from 2015 batch.

According to a recent media report, the licenses of 14 speciality doctors from 2015 batch of CPS have been suspended for one year by the state Medical Council for submitting fake Post Graduate (PG) certificates, including fake Diploma in Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and Diploma in Medical Radiology and Electrology. The decision for the same was taken during the recent executive committee members meeting.

This came in a wake of discrepancies found in the record of CPS by the council. Thereafter, an investigation was initiated, wherein, the medical practitioners confessed that they flunked the examination conducted by CPS but still managed to obtain passing certificates.

Over the last couple of years, MMC has been constantly taking action against doctors with fake certificates. Till now, they have taken action against as many as 150 such doctors. The council is still looking into records of CPS from 2014.

Medical Dialogues has been extensively reporting about the Fake Post-Graduate (PG) certificate scam since then. A few months ago, 40 "super speciality doctors" were about to face suspension by the Council in connection with the Fake PG certificate scam.

It was a shock for the council's officials to hear that the fraudulent activities were reportedly taking place inside the premises of CPS. Vested with limited power, the council has written to the government to take over the institute, make changes and create a four-point programme. Further, it asked the CPS faculty to be changed and teachers from Maharashtra University of Health Science (MUHS) has to be appointed there.

As per a recent Pune Mirror report, the exams were conducted by the CPS examiners so MMC has asked that they to be replaced by staff from MUHS as they are experienced examiners. Moreover, the inspection of CPS has to be done by the member of MUHS and Medical Council of India (MCI), similar to what is done in other medical colleges.

"The suspension decision was taken by the executive committee after finding discrepancies in the record and the doctors accepted the charges. We have also asked the government to make changes and take over the institute as that will help them to give quality education to the students at an affordable price. This is a 100-year-old institute and such changes will definitely help young upcoming doctors, "Dr Shivkumar Utture, President, MMC told Pune Mirror.

"The current fees for the courses are very high so students from rural areas cannot afford it. The objective of the institute is to take as many students as possible from rural parts of the state for several diploma courses. Such changes will definitely bring more specialised doctors to rural parts of the state, " he added.
