Delivery of modern healthcare depends on coming together of trained professionals : Purohit

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday said delivery of modern health care depends on groups of trained professionals and para professionals coming together to form inter-disciplinary teams. Inaugurating the first National Conference of Nurses-A Voice to Lead, on the occasion of International Nurses Day here, he said health care was undoubtedly an important determinant in promoting the physical and mental health and general well being of people. It revolves around the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, illness, injury and other physical and mental impairments in human beings, he said.

''The delivery of modern health care depends on groups of trained professionals and para professionals coming together to form inter-disciplinary teams. This include professionals in medicine, psychology, nursing, physiotherapy working along with many others such as community health workers, so as to be able to provide the best health beyond all this care services to the people'', he added. Mr Purohit said it was also necessary to psychologically relate to the patient.

Batting for more fund allocation for healthcare, the Governor said Tamil Nadu has always been an important centre for medical diagnosis and treatment and it was the first State to enact the Public Health Act. Noting that the Government General Hospital and the Government Eye Hospital were among the oldest in Asia, Mr Purohit said the State enjoyed an impressive record in the reduction of infant mortality and maternal mortality rates. He said private sector involvement in the establishment of hospital for medical treatment has also been existent in Tamil Nadu for more than 100 years.

Pointing out that Tamil Nadu was ranked first in the country in terms of number of children immunized and takes pride in the lakhs of eminent medical practitioners and nursing professionals engaged in providing healthcare, he said the Tamil Nadu model was the best prototype health care delivery system in resource-limited settings which could be emulated by other states also towards a better health care delivery system. It was no wonder that Tamil Nadu serves as a hub for medical tourism in the eastern part of the globe, Mr Purohit said and added that today the State attracts about 40 percent of those who come into India for medical treatment.
