USA: Revivv, a novel topical serum, meaningfully improved hair growth without adverse events in patients with androgenetic alopecia, states a recent study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (JDD). By week 8, 80% of participants reported increased hair volume, growth, scalp coverage, and regrowth.

Pattern-type hair loss is a highly prevalent condition that affects most men and women at some point in their lifetime. Androgens and genetics are known to play an essential role in its pathogenesis, but it is now increasingly recognized that stress, inflammation, and environmental factors play a central role.

Some monotherapies approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA), such as finasteride or minoxidil, are not productive in all people and cause adverse events that prevent patient compliance. Therefore, there arises a need for new treatments that are easy to use and holistically address the multi-factorial pathophysiology of pattern-type hair loss. Clinical studies have already shown the efficacy and safety of many bioactive natural products, such as Vitis vinifera seed extract, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), saw palmetto extract, and apigenin, in improving hair follicle homeostasis via anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, anti-androgen, and anti-inflammatory action.

In their study, Jeffrey Rapaport, Cosmetic Skin and Surgery Center and Hair-Therapy Hair Medical Clinic, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, and colleagues present a novel topical serum, REVIVV containing a proprietary blend of phytochemicals designed to reduce shedding, stimulate hair growth and restore homeostasis to the hair follicle. They evaluate the efficacy and safety of the serum in 150 participants in a real-world clinical setting. They found that Revivv improved hair growth.

During their treatment of 8 weeks, 150 participants (mean age 56.4 years; 60% women) massaged Revivv with a roller into the crown, frontal, and vertex areas of the scalp twice a day and left it overnight.

The study revealed the following findings:

  • Eighty percent of participants reported increased hair growth, volume, scalp coverage and regrowth at week 8. Ninety percent also noticed an increased frequency of new hair, and 100% reported decreased hair shedding. All participants further said Revivv was easy to use.
  • Seven patients participated in the phototrichogram substudy, which showed statistically significant increases in hair thickness (~16% and ~15%) and density (~25% and ~11%) in the crown and vertex at week 8 compared with baseline.
  • All participants reported that the product was easy to use and did not affect hair styling, and most expressed interest in continued use. Furthermore, the serum caused no adverse events.

"We show that twice-daily use of the novel topical serum REVIVVÂ by 150 patients from an ethnically diverse real-world setting resulted in meaningful improvements in hair growth and high patient satisfaction with no side effects," the authors wrote.

"Larger clinical studies with a longer follow-up to evaluate efficacy are currently underway," they concluded.
