In patients with type 2 diabetes, serum leptin is positively correlated with aortic stiffness, says an article published in Frontiers in Bioscience-Landmark.The number of individuals living with diabetes mellitus (DM) increases on a global scale. Regardless of differences in race or ethnicity, obesity, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension are independently linked with the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in diabetes individuals. In order to detect cardiovascular risk at an early stage, Tsung-Jui and colleagues looked at the link between blood leptin levels and aortic stiffness in patients with type 2 diabetes.

After being screened at a hospital in Eastern Taiwan for eligibility, 128 diabetic patients in total were enrolled. Applanation tonometry was used to measure aortic stiffness, which was indicated by a carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) greater than 10 m/s. Leptin and other related indicators were measured in fasting serum levels using enzyme immunoassay or biochemical analysis.

The key findings of this study were:

1. In the group of patients with aortic stiffness, 46 diabetics with cfPWVs greater than 10 m/s were included.

2. Aortic stiffness group (n = 82) was substantially older (p = 0.019) than the control group (n = 82), and it had higher body fat mass (p = 0.002), systolic blood pressure (SBP), serum triglycerides (p = 0.02), and serum leptin (p 0.001).

3. Aortic stiffness was also linked to insulin resistance and worse blood sugar regulation (p = 0.026).

4. Age, SBP ( = 0.176; p = 0.033), the logarithmically transformed urinary albumin-creatinine ratio, and serum leptin levels were all independently associated with cfPWV values in the multivariable linear regression analyses examining the correlations between aortic stiffness and clinical variables.

5. Only leptin, according to the analysis, was linked to a greater likelihood of aortic stiffness.
