Study finds Independent Association of Vitamin A and Vitamin D Status With Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes: Study

China: A new study has found that serum levels of vitamin A (VA) and vitamin D (VD) were significantly associated with fasting blood glucose levels in children and independently associated with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. These findings suggest that maintaining adequate vitamin A and vitamin D status may be clinically relevant in the management of pediatric T1DM. However, further well-designed longitudinal and interventional studies are required to confirm these associations and determine their therapeutic implications.
Published in Frontiers in Nutrition, the retrospective observational study by Shuhan Rao from the Department of Clinical Laboratory, Zhengzhou Key Laboratory of Children’s Infection and Immunity, Children’s Hospital Affiliated to Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, China, and colleagues examined the association between vitamin A, vitamin D, and type 1 diabetes in children.
The study compared 31 children with T1DM and 31 healthy controls using clinical and laboratory data from electronic medical records. Children with T1DM had significantly lower serum vitamin A and vitamin D levels and a higher prevalence of vitamin deficiency. Both vitamin A and vitamin D levels were also inversely associated with fasting blood glucose, with lower vitamin levels linked to higher glucose concentrations.

- The analysis also demonstrated a significant association between vitamin A and vitamin D deficiency and the presence of T1DM in children.
The researchers noted that the single-center design, small sample size, and lack of data on factors such as diet, sunlight exposure, disease duration, and long-term glycemic control may have influenced the findings. They also did not assess the effects of vitamin supplementation on clinical outcomes.
Overall, the study suggests that lower vitamin A and vitamin D levels are independently associated with type 1 diabetes and higher fasting blood glucose in children. However, the authors stress that causality cannot be established and recommend larger prospective and interventional studies to determine whether optimizing vitamin status can improve the prevention or management of pediatric T1DM.
