In this video, Dr Carel Le Roux, Clinician Scientist at University College Dublin, explains the challenge of maintaining weight reduction in people living with obesity, noting that biological adaptations can promote weight regain after weight loss1.
He highlights findings from the SURMOUNT-MAINTAIN study2, where continued tirzepatide treatment helped maintain weight reduction over two years. Patients continuing the maximum tolerated dose maintained 100% of their initial weight loss, while those reducing the dose to 5 mg maintained 70.5%. Continued treatment was also associated with sustained improvements in waist circumference, blood pressure, and HbA1c. Gastrointestinal adverse events were the most frequently reported and were generally mild to moderate, particularly during dose escalation2.
