Pune: In yet another case of assault, a resident doctor associated with DY Patil Medical College and Hospital in Pimpri was brutally attacked with a scalpel by the relatives of a patient, after a 26 -year-old man suddenly died following a cardiac arrest. The doctor suffered number of blunt injuries and deep cuts on his face as a result.

The case was that of patient who was a known case of Cardiopulmonary illness and died in ICU due to sudden Cardiac Arrest despite best efforts of the doctor to revive the patient

The assault happened immediately after the doctors declared the patient. The angry relatives of the young deceased burst into the ICU and began creating a ruckus claiming negligence. Soon one of them grad hold of a scalpel and attacked the duty doctor. A few other doctors, both male and female, paramedics and other hospital personnel were also attacked by them

A resident doctor at the hospital narrated to TOI, “A local politician claiming to be a policeman hoodwinked the security and entered the ICU, where quite a few critical patients were undergoing treatment. He arrived with some supporters within 10 minutes of the event.” The doctors and staff were further assaulted by the mob and threatened

Responding to the incident, resident doctors of the medical college immediately went on a flash strike with support pouring in from all corners of the medical fraternity. A police complaint was filed after the protest from doctors

Inspector Masaji Kale of Pimpri police station informed TOI, “A medical practitioner, Aditya Kartik Pandeyan (29), lodged a complaint. Two unidentified men and two unidentified women have been booked for beating up the doctors.”
