Claim

In an Instagram reel it is claimed that Lemon, Garlic, Turmeric and Honey Cures Fatty Liver in 8 Days. In the reel by ansari_healthtips it is said, "In just eight days, your fatty liver will become as good as new with this home remedy that I’m about to tell you. Friends, the liver is such an organ in our body that even after being 90% damaged, it can still heal itself. However, we often rely on medicines for it — tablets, capsules, and injections — which end up doing more harm than good. Because of their side effects, the liver gets further damaged, more toxins accumulate, and fat builds up.

Friends, today I’m going to tell you a remedy that will completely cleanse your liver. The toxins will be flushed out through urine, all impurities will be removed, and your liver will become clean and healthy again like before. You’ll also be protected from many types of diseases.

For this remedy, just go straight to your kitchen. Take a glass of water. Squeeze the juice of one whole lemon into it. Take two cloves of garlic, crush them, and add them to the water. Add a pinch of turmeric and half a teaspoon of honey. Mix all these ingredients well in the glass of water and keep it overnight. In the morning, strain the water and drink it on an empty stomach.

Do this continuously for eight days. God willing, you’ll see your liver starting to cleanse, toxins being released from your body, energy returning within you, and diseases moving away from your system. Try this remedy and make your liver clean and healthy again — just like before — and make yourself strong and fit."

Fact Check

The claim is FALSE. There is no scientific evidence or medical consensus that fatty liver disease can be cured within such a short period (8 days) just by consuming lemon, garlic, turmeric and honey. While some of these foods may support liver health, they do not replace medical treatment and sustained lifestyle changes.

What is Fatty Liver?

Fatty liver, or Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), is a condition in which excess fat accumulates in the liver cells despite minimal or no alcohol intake. It is broadly classified into two types Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver (NAFL) and Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH). NAFL, also known as simple steatosis, involves the build-up of fat in the liver without causing inflammation or liver cell damage. In contrast, NASH is a more serious form characterized by inflammation, swelling of liver cells (known as hepatocyte ballooning), the presence of Mallory hyaline, and inflammatory cell infiltration, which can eventually lead to fibrosis or cirrhosis. The distinction between NAFL and NASH can only be confirmed through a liver biopsy, as NAFLD exists on a spectrum ranging from mild fat deposition to advanced liver damage.

What are the Types of Fatty Liver?

Fatty liver disease progresses through four stages, each reflecting an increasing level of liver damage. The first stage, Type 1, is marked by fat accumulation (macrovesicular steatosis) without inflammation and is generally harmless. Type 2 involves fat build-up along with lobular inflammation, indicating early liver stress. In Type 3, both fat accumulation and ballooning degeneration occur, signifying actual liver cell injury. Type 4 represents the most advanced stage, with fat accumulation, ballooning, and the presence of Mallory hyaline or fibrosis, which may progress to cirrhosis. While Types 1 and 2 are reversible with consistent lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet and regular exercise, Types 3 and 4 cause significant and often irreversible liver damage. However, with proper medical management and lifestyle control, the progression of the disease can be slowed down and further complications can be prevented.

What are the Nutritional Benefits of Lemon, Garlic, Turmeric and Honey?

Lemon is a low-calorie fruit rich in nutrients and widely valued for its culinary, medicinal, and nutritional benefits. An unpeeled lemon has about 22 calories, while a tablespoon of lemon juice contains just 3 calories. A quarter cup of lemon juice offers around 31% of the daily vitamin C requirement, along with small amounts of folate and potassium.

Garlic, a spice rich in polyphenols and organosulfur compounds, has been consumed since ancient times. Research shows it possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cholesterol-lowering properties.

Turmeric, commonly known as Haldi is widely recognized for its vibrant orange-yellow hue and distinctive flavor, primarily due to its active compound curcumin. It possesses notable anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. In Ayurvedic practice, turmeric is traditionally used to manage a range of respiratory conditions such as asthma, allergies, and bronchial hyperreactivity, along with liver ailments, loss of appetite, rheumatism, diabetic wounds, cough, sinusitis, and nasal discharge.

Honey is produced from flower nectar by honeybees, has been celebrated for its nutritional, medicinal, and industrial applications for centuries. Ancient cultures such as the Greeks, Egyptians, and Chinese valued honey for both nourishment and healing—a tradition that persists today. Widely used in beverages, honey is highly stable due to its low water activity (0.56–0.62) and slightly acidic pH (around 3.9), enabling long-term storage without refrigeration. Beyond its role in culinary delights, honey offers antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties, along with protective effects on the respiratory, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and nervous systems.

Garlic is recognized for its hepatoprotective properties, as highlighted in a study published in Food Chemistry Advances. The study suggests that garlic helps protect the liver from damage, thereby contributing to overall liver health.

Turmeric, a commonly used spice known for its medicinal value has recently drawn attention for its role in promoting liver health. Dr. Naveen Polavarapu, Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist, Liver Specialist & Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopist & Endosonologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad in a conversation explained, "The "Liver Cleanse" Myth

First, it's important to understand that your liver is not a dirty filter that needs periodic flushing or cleansing. It is your body's primary and highly efficient detoxification organ already. It continuously filters your blood, metabolizes medications, neutralizes toxins, and produces bile to carry waste out of the body.

The Role of the Individual Ingredients:

⦁ Turmeric: Turmeric has an anti-inflammatory property. Fatty liver disease is mainly caused by chronic inflammation and Turmeric may offer benefit.

⦁ Lemon: Lemons are rich in vitamin C which is a potent anti-oxidant that offers anti- inflammatory benefits.

⦁ Garlic: Garlic is rich in allicin and selenium which carry potent anti oxidant property.

⦁ Honey: Honey has anti inflammatory effects. However, Honey is rich in sugars(fructose and glucose) which may raise the blood sugars.

In conclusion, although these have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, there is no scientific evidence that these can detoxify the liver. The idea of a quick-fix "cleanse" is an oversimplification of a complex, ongoing process.

In short, to keep your liver healthy,

1) Eat balanced and nutritious diet

2) Exercise regularly.

3) Keep Diabetes, high cholesterol levels under control

4) Avoid liver toxic agents like alcohol, indigenous medications.

5) Use medications wisely."

Dr. D. Chandra Sekhar Reddy, Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist and Therapeutic Endoscopist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad further added, "This message of lemon, garlic, turmeric and honey curing fatty liver in eight days is fake. Fatty liver is mainly caused by Obesity, uncontrolled diabetes, high cholesterol level and usage of some drugs. In fatty liver disease we have to control all these risk factors to reverse the fatty liver. Fatty liver main stay of treatment is weight reduction and usage of drugs like Resmiterom at least for one year. Claiming of lemon, garlic, turmeric and honey cures fatty liver disease is false and some times turmeric in genetically susceptible individuals can cause severe liver damage."
