Fact Check

The claim is False. There is no scientific evidence that this drink cures colon cancer or eliminates ovarian cysts. While these ingredients may have some health benefits, they cannot replace medical treatment for conditions like cancer or ovarian cysts.

What is Colon Cancer?

Colon cancer is the third most common cancer and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. While incidence has declined in older adults due to screening, rates are rising among younger adults. Most cases are sporadic, though about 5% are linked to genetic syndromes like Lynch syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis. Cancer typically develops over years through the adenoma-carcinoma sequence. Diagnosis is confirmed via colonoscopy and biopsy, with staging requiring imaging and tumor marker evaluation. Treatment for early-stage disease involves surgery, while advanced cases may need chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or palliative care. Ongoing surveillance is essential to detect recurrence or metastasis.

What are ovarian cysts?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on or inside the ovaries. Most are functional cysts a normal part of the menstrual cycle and resolve on their own. Others, such as dermoid cysts, endometriomas, or cystadenomas, are less common and may require monitoring or treatment. While many cysts are harmless and asymptomatic, larger ones can cause pelvic pain, bloating, or irregular periods. In rare cases, they may rupture or twist (ovarian torsion), leading to emergency symptoms. Diagnosis is typically done via pelvic ultrasound. Treatment depends on the type, size, and symptoms.

What are the Health Benefits of Oregano leaves, turmeric and Black pepper?

Oregano, a Mediterranean herb now grown worldwide, has long been used in traditional medicine. Historically valued by Greeks and Romans, oregano is still used in folk remedies in Greece. Scientific studies show that oregano extracts have strong antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, with potential benefits for cardiovascular health, blood sugar control, and inflammation.

Turmeric, commonly known as Haldi, is derived from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa L. and is recognized for its vibrant orange-yellow color and curcumin content, its primary active compound. It is known for its potent anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. In Ayurveda, turmeric has been traditionally used to manage a variety of conditions including respiratory issues such as asthma, allergies, and bronchial hyperactivity, as well as liver problems, poor appetite, rheumatism, diabetic wounds, sinusitis, cough, and runny nose.

Black pepper, often called the "King of Spices," is prized not just for its flavor-enhancing qualities but also for its wide range of medicinal benefits. It contains piperine, a potent bioactive compound known for its antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and lipid-lowering properties. Research highlights its ability to combat infections, alleviate oxidative stress, and provide anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and neuroprotective effects.

Can Oregano leaves, turmeric, Black pepper drink get rid of colon cancer and ovarian cysts?

The ingredients oregano, turmeric, and black pepper have been studied for anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, but there is no credible scientific evidence or medical consensus that it cures colon cancer or removes ovarian cysts. Hence, the claim is FALSE.

Oregano, a popular culinary herb, has garnered scientific interest for its potential health benefits beyond the kitchen. A study conducted by Maša Knez Hrnčič et. al. highlights that oregano exhibits potent antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. These findings underscore oregano’s potential as a natural bioactive agent with health-protective benefits.

Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has been widely explored for its diverse therapeutic and industrial applications. A review by Javad Sharifi-Rad et. al. highlights curcumin’s role in promoting health and preventing disease. The study emphasizes its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anticancer, hepatoprotective, and cardioprotective effects.

Black pepper, a staple in kitchens worldwide, is gaining scientific recognition for its medicinal value. A study published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicine reports that black pepper exhibits a broad spectrum of pharmacological effects, including antioxidant, antifungal, antimicrobial, and antiepileptic properties.

Oregano, turmeric and black pepper may have certain health benefits but there is no scientific evidence or medical consensus that they can get rid of colon cancer and ovarian cysts.

Responding to the claim Dr Saadvik Raghuram Y, HOD - Medical Oncology and Haematology, Arete Hospitals said, "Based on current evidence, the simple and short answer is no, not entirely. Natural remedies alone cannot get rid of cancer.

Cancer is a complex disease influenced by various factors, including lifestyle, nutrition, and genetics. Oncology relies on evidence-based treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. These treatments have undergone rigorous clinical trials and are based on years of research, tailored to the type, stage, and profile of the cancer.

While natural remedies are not a cure, they can play a supportive role in cancer care. For example, they might help in managing side effects, improving the patient's quality of life, and meeting their nutritional needs. However, replacing evidence-based cancer treatment with only herbs or home remedies is not only ineffective but can also be dangerous.

There is scientific interest in compounds found in certain natural substances. For instance, turmeric (especially curcumin), black pepper, and oregano (containing carvacrol) have shown anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, these effects have primarily been observed in lab studies. Lab activity does not always mean something will work in humans or be a cure for a condition. Many substances that show promise in the lab fail in human clinical trials. While these compounds might potentially help in preventing cancer or reducing inflammation, they do not eliminate established cancers; that is, they do not kill already formed cancer cells.

Regarding specific conditions mentioned, colon cancer is treated by surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. Ovarian cysts are a different medical condition, and most are benign and resolve on their own. However, certain complex and persistent cysts require oncological evaluation. There is no herbal drink that can resolve these cysts.

In conclusion, while substances like oregano, turmeric, and black pepper can certainly be part of a healthy diet, they are not substitutes for your medical treatment when you have conditions like colon cancer or ovarian cysts. Always rely on established medical care for serious health issues."

Dr. Neeta Ravindranathan, Consultant, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, KIMSHEALTH Trivandrum further said, "Ovarian cyst" is a broad term, and it’s important to understand that there are many different types of cysts, each with its own characteristics and treatment protocols. Some cysts may resolve on their own or respond well to medical management, while others may require surgical intervention.

There is currently no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of natural remedies in treating ovarian cysts. It is essential to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and evidence-based treatment. Self-treating with natural remedies alone is not recommended and could delay appropriate medical care."
