New Delhi: Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh set an example in clinical excellence in identifying the congenitally malformed kidney in a one year old infant and treating her to save her life. The surgical team was led by Dr. Rajinder Yadav, Director – Urology and Kidney Transplant, Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh.

Baby Vanshikha belonging to Shabadpur village suffered from high grade fever coupled with vomiting. Her parents took her to a nearby hospital where due to lack of facilities they were referred to Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh. Investigations revealed that a large palpable mass in the left region of her abdomen.  Further investigations revealed liver function deranged and the left kidney’s surrounding structures were enhanced. Clots were detected going upto the heart through inferior vena cava, the biggest vein running at the back of the right side of the heart. The vena cava carries the de-oxygenated blood from the lower and middle body into the right atrium of the heart. Clots were increasing in size and travelling towards the heart. With a congenitally malformed kidney the only option that seemed to be best was removal of the organ.

The surgery for removal of the malformed kidney presented significant challenges and the heart had to be shifted to a machine with the help of cardiologists so that it could function normally during the surgical procedure.Additionally, the right kidney had to be clamped so that the blood loss is minimal.

Dr Rajinder Yadav, Director Urology & Kidney Transplant said, “This was a case of surgical treatment that lasted for about three hours. The challenges were not only because the child was so young, it was also because we did not want any blood loss; the heart shifted to a machine; the rare incidence of such cases and the thrombosis which was already present in the organs. With minimal blood loss we were able to treat this young child and she is fit now.”

The parents were very thankful to the team and said, “There are no words to express how grateful we are to the doctors for detecting the problem and treating it timely. Any delay could have resulted in the loss of our child without knowing the cause.”
