According to doctors, mishandled procedures and incorrect medicine caused the side-effects of the medicines and tools used during the operation.

Haryana: 38 people who underwent eye surgeries at a government hospital here were admitted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak (PGI Rohtak) are now suffering from severe eye pain and infection post operation leading to cries of medical negligence.

The doctors of a special retina unit team at PGIMS' eye department who are treating the patients claimed that the condition of the eyes has become so critical that the affected patients might lose their sight.

The Medical Director of PGI Rohtak, Dr Rohtash Yadav told the DNA, "Our priority right now is to give them the required treatment and then we will look into the reasons how this happened. We will get to know the surgery results soon."

An official from PGI Rohtak informed NDTV, "Till now 19 patients have been operated...all the patients are doing well on topical and systemic antibiotics. Their vision is gradually improving. None of the patient has complete loss of vision. Eleven patients have been discharged and advised regular follow up."

An elderly man affected by the surgery claimed that he consulted a doctor after the operation with complaints of intolerable eyes pain but the doctor told him that it is just an after-effect of the surgery.

However, when the pain continued, the elderly man went to another doctor who detected pus in his eyes and referred him to PGIMS where he is currently undergoing treatment.

According to doctors, mishandled procedures and incorrect medicine caused the side-effects of the medicines and tools used during the operation.

A doctor informed the Tribune that the samples of consummables such as jelly, injections and fluid being used in the operation theatre had been sent to the Central Laboratory in Chandigarh.
