Health Ministry nominates Medanta Endocrinologist Dr Ambarish Mithal as President AIIMS Gorakhpur
New Delhi: Medanta Endocrinologist Dr Ambarish Mithal has been appointed as the President of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Gorakhpur (AIIMS Gorakhpur)
Confirmation to this effect was recently made by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare via a Gazette notification that stated
Dr Ambrish Mithal is an Indian endocrinologist, diabetologist and the Chairman and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes division of Medanta, the Medicity, a super speciality hospital located at Gurgaon, Haryana. He secured the master’s degree of DM from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, worked at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow and, later, at Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi before joining Medanta. Mithal was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Bhushan, the third-highest Indian civilian award.
In March 2017 Dr Mithal was awarded the BC Roy Award by the President of India (for the year 2015).
The initiation of AIIMS Gorakhpur goes back to the year 2016 when Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to benefit the residents of 14 districts of eastern UP and neighbouring districts of Bihar. It was aimed to unburden the existing facilities of BRD Medical College which was in a tough spot after the high infant deaths due to JE

In exercise of the power conferred by section 7 (1) of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956 (25 of 1956), as amended by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Act, 2012 (37 of 2012), the Central Government hereby nominates Dr. Ambrish Mithal, Endocrinologist, Medanta as President of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Gorakhpur.

- Dr T. S. Ravikumar, Retired Director JIPMER and Director cum VC of SVIMS, took over as President as President AIIMS Manglagiri on 02-Nov-2018.
- Dr YK Gupta serves as the President of AIIMS Bhopal. Before taking the charge of the President at AIIMS Bhopal, Dr Gupta held the position of Head of Department (HoD) of Pharmacology and Pharmacovigilance at the Delhi headquarters.
- Dr Subrat Kumar Acharya, retired HOD Department of Gasteroenterology AIIMS New Delhi serves as President AIIMS, Bhubaneshwar
