NMC disapproval to recognition of 150 MBBS Seats at GMC Mahabubnagar

Hyderabad: The intake for undergraduate medical courses in Telangana has decreased as the National Medical Commission (NMC) has disapproved the proposal for 150 MBBS seats at Government Medical College, Mahabubnagar.

NMC has taken this decision citing deficiencies in the college. Referring to the issue a member from the apex medical commission told TOI, "The college had received its permanent recognition after completing five years but was due for a renewal (done every five years). Not having adequate faculty is the prime reason for rejection. This is a problem with many colleges."

This is the fifth medical college in the State and the second government medical institute to lose recognition for seats for a particular batch in the last two years. With the rejection from NMC regarding the first renewal of the college, the future of 150 outgoing MBBS students from the college are at risk of having their degrees without the required recognition. 

Previously, Government Medical College, Nizamabad also faced NMC rejection in the academic year 2018-2019. However, later the college got permission from the apex medical commission on the basis of an undertaking from the state health secretary to rectify the deficiencies.

GMC Mahabubnagar started in the Academic year 2016-2017 with an intake capacity of 150 MBBS students. It is affiliated with Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences, Warangal. This is the first medical college to be started after the formation of Telangana State. 

NMC recognized the medical college for 150 MBBS seats for renewal of permission for the academic year 2020-2021. In the academic year 2019-2020, permission was given to the college for increase of seats from 150 to 175 under the EWS quota. The apex medical commission recognized for 150 seats only in respect of the students admitted in 2016-17 for academic year 2021-22 and this year, the college was due for renewal.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, citing deficiencies, NMC has disapproved the proposal of the Government Medical College, Mahabubnagar, for 150 MBBS Seats. The letter of disapproval sent to the college dean stated, "Your college was assessed by assessors appointed by the MARB (medical assessment and rating board) to conduct physical assessment during the final MBBS practical examination on 27, February 2023. The assessment report along with AEBAS (Aadhaar-enabled biometric attendance system) and HMIS data including CCTV were considered. Deficiencies were noted in respect of teaching faculty and installation of cameras."

the Daily adds that a virtual hearing was given on June 6 on receipt of the response from the medical college. Referring to this, the NMC letter further mentioned, "The response of the college authorities is not found to be satisfactory and the Government Medical College does not qualify for minimum requirement of faculty, resident doctors on AEBAS and installation/functioning of cameras. Hence, the application for recognition of MBBS degree (150 seats) for Government Medical College, Mahabubnagar, is disapproved."
