New Delhi: Keeping in view the impact the COVID-19 pandemic made on the overall medical academia, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted a one-year extension to the recognition of PG Medical Degree and Diploma courses.

This extension will not be applicable in those cases where medical institutes have received any order regarding the stoppage of admissions to particular PG medical courses.

With the NEET PG counselling process initiating on September 1st, medical colleges across the country have been asked by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) to provide details of the number of PG medical seats they will be offering i.e. 50% Post Graduate Seats in Broad Specialty Medical Courses (MD/ MS/ Diploma) Under "All India Quota" and 100% seats of Central/ Deemed Universities for the year 2022.

In this regard, NMC is in receipt of requests from PG Medical Colleges regarding the status of recognition/ renewal of recognition of PG Degree/ Diploma courses for which applications were submitted by them during 2022 in order to fill up the seat matrix for All India Quota and State Quota Medical Counselling.

However, the NMC is still in the process of issuing new LoP's for the academic year 2022.

"The applications submitted for recognition/ renewal of recognition of PG Degree/ Diploma Courses during 2022 are under process and will take time," stated the notification issued by Aujender Singh, Deputy Secretary at the NMC to all the Directors, Principals and Deans of all medical institutes.

Therefore, the Post Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) of the NMC in its meeting held on 28th June 2022 discussed the issue and decided to grant the 1-year extension to the recognition of PG medical courses, but the extension will not be applicable in such cases wherein institutes that have received orders from the authorities to make no admissions to specific PG medical courses.

"To obliterate the difficulties being faced by the colleges and the students due to non-recognition/ non-renewal of the PG courses in view of the Covid pandemic and related administrative issues, recognition of courses of such colleges/ institutions may be extended by one more year i.e. up till admission for the 2022 batch.
However, it will not be applicable in those cases for which any specific order has been issued by Medical Assessment and Rating Board or Post Graduate Medical Education Board for stopping of admission in any specific course."

Hence, all Medical Colleges and Institutions imparting Post Graduate Medical Courses (MD, MS and PG Diploma) are requested to fill the seat matrix for medical counselling, accordingly.

Recently, the MCC also released an official notification asking the medical colleges to submit details of only those PG Medical seats for which they have received the Letter of Permission (LOP) not the seats they have received the Letter of Intent (LoI) from the NMC.

Last year in October, the NMC provided similar relief after noting that the system of physical inspection at the time of examination could not be followed as prescribed by the regulation and therefore, the process of recognition of new PG courses, recognition against the increased intake of PG courses and renewal of recognition of PG courses could not be completed.

In these circumstances, the National Medical Commission had allowed provisional recognition of all PG medical courses for a period of one year.
