A Letter of Intent (LOI) issued by NMC on June 13 mentioned, "The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC examined the Assessor's report dated 17.01.2023 and physical compliance verification assessment dated 13.03.2023 relating to the availability of infrastructure facilities of the college, laboratories, library, hostel, hospital and availability of the faculty, their experience, publication and residents/ tutors, nursing and paramedical staff available with other facilities at GMC, Purnea under Aryabhatta Knowledge University, Patna for starting of MBBS course for the academic year 2023-24."

With GMCH at Purnea, there will be 12 government medical colleges in Bihar, including AIIMS and IGIMS, which will have a total of 2,040 MBBS seats. Currently, the state has 10 government medical colleges including GMC, Purnea and 1100 MBBS seats.

Addressing the dean or the principal of the Purnea government medical college, the letter also added that admissions will start only after formal permission from the MARB.

Former dean of Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU), Dr Rajiv Ranjan Prasad told TOI, "The new government medical college will bring a big change in that region. Though there are private medical colleges in Katihar and Kishanganj, this one is the first government medical college in the entire Kosi region and will play an important role."

When asked about permission needed from MARB before taking admissions, he replied, "It will not take much time. Counselling for admission to MBBS is expected to begin in a fortnight and by that time MARB will also give a go-ahead for admissions at Purnea medical college."

The achievement also received praise from the Health department's additional chief secretary Pratyaya Amrit who called it a big achievement in the field of health infrastructure.
