NMC specifies Recognised PG faculty-to-student ratio in Medical Colleges
New Delhi: Releasing the Minimum Standard Requirements for Postgraduate Courses (PGMSR) 2024, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has specified the ratio of recognized Post-graduate faculty to the number of students to be admitted for the PG broad speciality and super-speciality courses.
According to the guidelines issued by the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) of the NMC, for Government Colleges and Non-Government Colleges/ Medical Institutions with 15 years of standing (where PG medical courses have been running since10 years), the Professor/ Associate Prof as Unit Head/ Associate Professor to student ratio is 1:3 and in case of other non-government colleges, this ratio is 1:2.
Similarly, the Associate Professor to Student ratio in Government Colleges and Non-Government Colleges/ Medical Institutions with 15 years of standing (where PG medical courses are running since 10 years) is 1:2 and in case of other non-Government Colleges, this ratio is 1:1.
For the PG degree Super-Speciality courses, in the case of government medical colleges, the professor-to-student, Associate Prof. to students and Assistant Prof. to students ratios are 1:2, 1:2, and 1:1 respectively.
In the case of non-government colleges, the professor-to-student ratio is 1:2, the Associate Prof. to student ratio is 1:2 and the Assistant Prof. to student ratio is 1:1.

For Associate Professor- If an Associate Professor fulfils all the eligibility criteria for the post of Professor as laid down in the “Teachers Eligibility Qualifications in Medical Institutions, Regulations” in vogue but has not been promoted.
Assistant Professor – If an Assistant Professor fulfils all the requirements of post-graduate Guide as per Teachers Eligibility Qualifications in Medical Institutions, Regulations” in vogue, he may be allotted 1(one) post-graduate student.

Counting of Beds:
ICU beds exclusively of the respective Department under its administrative control shall be included in bed strength of the Department.
The new MSR document i.e. PGMSR 2024 specifies the minimum requirements for the medical institutes imparting both undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses, requirements regarding faculty strength, bed occupancy, clinical material workload, ratio of eligible post-graduate faculty to students, number of minimum and maximum beds in a Unit, faculty, and senior resident requirements for the number of PG seats in different specialities, the list of functional departments mandatory in a specific medical college etc.
