NMC streamlines Medical Admissions: State Counselling Committees to now enter data on available seats, not medical colleges

New Delhi: With an aim to streamline the counselling process for admission to medical seats and improve the transparency in seat reporting, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has now written to all the State Medical Counselling Committees and informed that from the next academic year, the feeding of data in seat matrix will be done by each state counseling committees (SCC) along with MCC, DGHS instead of colleges/universities.

For this purpose, the Commission has also asked the medical colleges to nominate a nodal officer. In fact, the Apex Medical Commission has further clarified that from the academic year 2024-2025, the college/university authorities will no longer be allowed to enter data regarding the number of available medical seats for admission.

Writing to the State Counselling Committees on September 06, 2023, NMC mentioned, "The sections 14 and 15 of NMC, Act, 2019 empowers the National Medical Commission to regulate the manner of conducting of counselling by the designated authorities for admission to MBBS and PG-Medical seats in all the medical institutions which are governed by the provisions of this Act."

"In view of above, for improving transparency in seat reporting and making the counselling process for admission against medical seats more streamlined and efficient, it has been decided by the competent authority that from academic year 2024-25, the feeding of data in seat matrix will be done by each state counselling committee (SCC) along with MCC, DGHS instead of feeding by the colleges/ universities. The college/university authorities will no longer be allowed to enter data regarding number of available medical seats for admission," NMC further mentioned.

Asking the SCCs to nominate a nodal officer for this purpose, the Commission added, "Furthermore, each State counselling committee will also nominate a nodal officer for feeding such data. Such nodal officer will be personally responsible for correctness of data fed into system."

A copy of the letter has also been sent to the ADG, Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that as per the Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023, which was notified in the official Gazette of India on June 02, 2023, by NMC, there shall be a common counselling for admission to graduate courses in medicine for all Medical Institutions in India based on the merit list of the NEET-UG.

"Counselling shall entirely be based on the seat matrix provided by National Medical Commission; Provided the common counseling may have multiple rounds as may be necessary," it added.
