NMC would bring great transparency, quality in medical education, healthcare sector: PM Modi

PTI reports that while addressing the 33rd convocation of the state-run Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University through video conferencing, PM Modi had noted that NMC would bring great transparency and also rationalize norms to set up new medical colleges.

Modi also noted that during the last six years, MBBS seats increased by more than 30,000, which has been a rise of more than 50 percent from 2014. He further noted, the number of Post Graduate seats have increased by 24,000 which has been a rise of around 80 percent from 2014. In 2014, there were six AIIMS in the country.

While commenting on the same, PM Modi said, "In the last six years, we have approved 15 more AIIMS across the country."

Speaking about the ongoing transformation process of the healthcare sector, PM Modi said "Friends we are transforming the entire medical education and healthcare sector".

He also has voiced his assurance regarding the NMC. He said, "It will also improve the quality and availability of human resources in this sector."

As per the latest report by Outlook India, the Prime Minister has also requested the doctors to take care of their health as well by choosing a fitness regimen and by sticking to humor which should help them, the patients, and the staff alike. He has also advised the doctors to take care of their health by choosing from options like yoga, meditation, running, and cycling to ensure their well-being.

NMC bill had been passed in the Parliament houses in 2019 and it has become effective from last year. Since its origin, NMC has aimed at improving access to quality and affordable medical education reports the Daily.

The daily further reports that the center permitted the establishment of 11 new medical colleges in Tamil Nadu and the new colleges would be set up in districts that currently do not have a medical college. PM Modi has said in this matter, as reported by the daily, "For each of this college the Government of India will give more than Rs 2,000 crore."

Marking that the doctors are among the most respected professionals in the country the Prime Minister added, "This respect is because people know the seriousness of your profession where many times, it is literally a life and death question to someone."

Noting that among the 21,000 students being conferred 70 percent had been women, the Prime Minister had conferred special appreciation for the ladies, reports the daily. He had further noted that it had been always special to see women leading from the front in any field. "The success of you all and this institution would have made the great MGR (M G Ramachandran, former Chief Minister, and AIADMK founder) very happy. His governance was full of compassion towards the poor. The subjects of healthcare, education, and empowerment of women were dear to him," told the Prime Minister, as reported by the daily.

The daily adds that PM Modi had recalled his visit to Sri Lanka a few years back where MGR was born. India had been honored to be working for the Tamil sisters and brothers, added the Prime Minister.

He also noted before the students that they would now see the transition from learning to healing. The students had been graduating at a time when there had been great appreciation and respect for Indian scientists, added Modi.

Mentioning that the Covid-19 pandemic had been an unexpected occurrence and there had been no pre-set formula for the same, the Prime Minister also referred to the low death rates high recovery rates in India.

"Overall the Indian health ecosystem is being seen with new eyes, new respect, and new credibility. However, this also means that the world will have greater expectations from you which is a responsibility on your young and strong shoulders," added the Prime Minister.

He also cited the great poet Tiruvalluvar's line that any treatment covered four elements of the patient, doctor, medicine, and the care-giver. He said that throughout the pandemic all these four pillars were at the forefront, fighting war with an unknown enemy. He titled them "heroes of humanity".

Finally, he encouraged the students for the future by saying, "Rise above self-interest, doing so will make you fearless."
