Pune: Acting strong against an alleged medical negligence case, the Maharashtra State Human Right Commission (MSHRC) has directed Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to pay Rs 5 lakh compensation to a patient, who lost his leg during a varicose veins treatment at a municipal hospital.

The Maharashtra State Human Right Commission has also directed the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) to suspend or cancel the licence of the surgeon of Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial hospital.

The case was that of a 32 year old farmer who was admitted for the treatment varicose veins in September 2015 and was operated thereupon, during which due there was excessive bleeding, as a result of which his right leg had to be amputated.

The commission came into action after the victim's family filed a complaint against the doctor who operated on him. After the complaint filed against the doctor, PCMC commissioner Rajeev Jadhav had initiated a departmental inquiry against the surgeon and the team of doctors and nurses involved in the surgery, which confirmed negligence.

Order To be challenged in Higher Court

The order of the State Human rights commission is going to be challenged  by the authorities in court. When TOI contacted PCMC health chief Anil Roy he stated, "We have challenged the order in court as complications are known in varicose vein surgeries. Besides, the expert committee from B J Medical College gave their report confirming medical negligence without calling our doctors. They never heard our side."
