Hyderabad: 500 parents protest over an alleged medical negligence by Olive hospital

Over an alleged case of medical negligence by Olive Hospital, which led to the death of a nine-year old, there was a staged protest by the around 500 parents in the city. The death of nine-year-old Hardik Jena happened on January 27.

The reported incident of alleged medical negligence revolves around a simple medical theory (as alleged by the parents) of how can a simple case of cut on the hand lead to the serious consequence of the death of a victim. Hardik had reportedly suffered a cut on his hand after a glass pierced through his hand.

Later, at the hospital premise, it has been alleged that no doctor attended to him immediately for a recommended surgery (by the hospital authorities only). Then, due to an overdose of anaesthesia to treat him, Hardik could not survive the misplaced medical handling at the hospital.

The protest saw the involvement of Hardik's parents joined by his friends, relatives, and members of various parents associations. The Glendale Academy Parents Association also joined the silent protests of which Hardik was a Class III student of the Glendale Academy International School.

The protest was marked by a silent march and candle lighting in his memory. One of their prime demands is a fair and proper investigation into the matter, with a set timeline. The demand of a fair probe also includes handing over of all medical records, including the post-mortem report, to the parents and strict action against doctors and the hospital staff.

As reported by TOI, the representation will be submitted to Venkateshwar Rao, deputy commissioner of police (West Zone). Based on the complaint filed by Hardik's parents, a case was filed at the Langer Houz police station under Section 304 A (negligence causing death) of the IPC. "To identify if it was negligence on part of the hospital, we have sought expertise from other doctors. We will begin probe into the matter only when we get report from the experts," said Venkateshwar Rao.

The unfortunate incident took place last month when, while playing within the school premises, Hardik slipped and fell, suffering a cut when a piece of glass pierced his right hand. Soon after, the school authorities, with the help of his parents, shifted him to Olive Hospital, where the doctors recommended a surgery.

"But despite the injury being serious, the doctors did not attend to him immediately and delayed the surgery. Then during the procedure, we fear that the doctors gave him an anaesthesia overdose that may have led to his death," Ashish Jena,

Hardik's Reiterating the parents' stand, those part of Saturday's gathering demanded a thorough probe into the case. "A cut on the hand cannot lead to anybody's death. The hospital has been negligent in this case. What's worse is that even after two weeks, there has been no investigation and no documents have been shared with the parents so far," said Seema Agarwal, a parent who took part in the protest.
