Indira Gandhi Medical College gets recognition of Union Health Ministry
The Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute sponsored by the Puducherry government has been granted recognition by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry.
The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has granted recognition to the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute to award MBBS degrees to the students on or after 2014, a government release said here.
Consequent to the recognition the students passing out of the college would be able to get permanent registration from Tamil Nadu Medical council for commencing medical practice and also for pursuing post graduate medical education.
Only recently the college had ran into a controversy over alleged bribing of students to the first year in MBBS courses in the college. Secretary of CPI Puducherry State committee R Viswanathan has demanded a probe into a serious allegation on the government run medical college- Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute. The case involved alleged malpractices in selection of students to the first year MBBS course in the college.
R Viswanathan said there had been charges that a group of persons, including former Director of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute here had taken money from the parent of a student from Tamilnadu for admission to the course.
